How To Give The Best Handshake

Handshakes say a lot about you; too strong and you look like you’re overcompensating, too weak and you might look like you lack confidence.

With the goal of being remembered for the right reasons, it’s important we give good solid handshakes.

Three factors influence what makes a good handshake:

  • Timing
  • Location
  • Execution

Timing

Different cultures have different handshaking customs, so it’s important to be sensitive to the differences. Generally speaking, when introducing yourself, you should wait until the other person is done speaking, approach from somewhere within the individuals sightline, and vocalize your greeting in order to gain their attention.

Nothing is worse than being left hanging, it always makes me feel silly. If you make sure you can be seen and initiate the handshake with a greeting, you should be ok.

Location

Handshakes are good everywhere. There are many variations and handshakes are very customizable. Give em out whenever you want!

Here are some of my favorites:

I'd watch out for these two if I was an alien, hunting humans, in a jungle.

This handshake helps tone down a cheeky headbutt.

There's a flood up to their eyeballs and this handshake is still dry and fly.

Execution

Do:

Shake the other person’s hand firmly

Have clean hands

Look them in the eye and smile

Don’t:

Give them the wet, dead fish hand

Shake the other person’s hand with food or grease on your hands

Shake the other person’s hand with sweaty hands

In daily interactions, as in business, you want to leave a good impression. One of the best ways is by mastering all these different handshake techniques.

Shaking someone’s hand with sweaty hands is embarrassing. People who suffer from excessive sweating continually dread the moment they will have to shake someone’s hand because they’re afraid of the impression it will leave.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating. Actually, 9% of people between the ages 18 and 35 suffer from hyperhidrosis, It’s estimated that about 15.3 million people in the United States alone suffer from this affliction.

What’s most concerning is how many of those suffer in silence.
